History of Carmichael, CA

The community gets its name from landowner Dan Carmichael, who purchased 2,000 acres in 1910 from Joel Dedmond, who came into possession of the land through a Mexican land grant in 1844. Carmichael subdivided the land into  10-acre lots and advertised them for sale in Sunset Magazine.

The rich river bottom country that coursed through the community made the land ideal for growing hops, corn, tomatoes, and corn. Farms and ranches flourished along the river and turned the community into an agricultural hub.

The community saw robust development from the late 1950s through to the 1960s, with homes, schools, and shops being erected around town as the old farms disappeared one by one.
