History of Galt, CA
Formerly known as Dry Creek Township, Galt traces its recorded history to 1850,when several farmers settled the area around Dry Creek, a small stream near Galt. They used the land to grow livestock and produce dairy. The Central Pacific Railroad Company took interest in the area in 1869 with plans to develop a town to be served by the railroad.
Galt was named after a town in Ontario, Canada, where one of the local ranchers traced his roots. By this time, its residents included cattle ranchers, dairy farmers, and blacksmiths.
The town grew rapidly since its founding. By 1880, it had several stores and a hotel. It also had a wood yard, barley mill, blacksmith shops, and wagon and carriage shops. Many of the old wooden structures from this hese era have been preserved and can be seen around town.
Farming and cattle ranching declined at the turn of the century and Galt eventually became an agricultural town with wheat as a principal grain. Today, it is a primarily residential area with stunning homes and beautiful parks.
